Behind The Business With Julie Curran
Julie Curran has been helping people buy and sell homes in Durham Region and the Kawarthas for over 16 years. She’s passionate about what she does and where she lives.
Prior to entering the world of real estate Julie was a stay-at-home mom raising her 4 children along with running a home daycare, volunteering in a variety of programs including the Scugog Toy Lending Library, coaching kids soccer teams; as well as implementing a meal program at her children’s school. Her career started in 1999 as an unlicensed assistant to a successful real estate broker (Mary Roy) learning the behind -the-scenes tasks that are so important in running a successful business.
Port Perry and Community
Julie has lived in Port Perry for over 50 years and has raised her four children here. She always knew that this is where she wanted to build a life and run a business.
Knowing the community so well is certainly an advantage to operating her business in Port Perry. Being able to tell potential homebuyers where the closest hospital is and the best schools are can make a big difference; but the truth is, it’s easy to showcase everything that Port Perry and the local communities have to offer because it’s a great place to live and raise a family.
“Port Perry is definitely on the map, in so many different ways.” — Julie Curran
Julie is also big on giving back and is known to get involved with committees that build on and add to the vibrancy of her community. She is a past President of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, a current Director on the Scugog Housing committee, and most recently served on the Port Perry 150 Committee. To stay involved with the Durham business community, Julie attends local networking events.
Never Stop Learning
Julie’s greatest influence and mentor is real estate broker Mary Roy, who comes with nearly four decades of experience in helping clients buy and sell homes in Durham Region. Under Mary’s leadership, Julie learned the value of creating great relationships built on trust that extend far beyond the real estate transaction and she is happy to call Mary a good friend to this day.
If you’re considering starting your own business, Julie thinks it’s a great idea to reach out to someone who has experience and recommends finding a mentor that you feel comfortable going to for guidance. Having a good business plan in place is also crucial.
Because she is responsible for every aspect of her business and how it’s run, the SheEO title is one that Julie is happy to wear. She recognizes the importance of ongoing training and is a firm believer that you should never stop learning, especially when your industry changes as rapidly as real estate does.
As any small business owner, the past two years have presented several challenges for Julie and her clients. During this time, Julie looked at different ways to do business and notes amazing virtual training courses as one way her industry was able to support each other.
“Coming together is probably the biggest thing. Because there is no manual for what we had to go through the last two years. We all had to pull through together.” — Julie Curran
As a self-employed individual, Julie appreciates the benefits of hiring a team of professionals including reputable lawyers, accountants, home inspectors, builders, and renovators; and always recommends the same for her clients when it comes to making important financial decisions related to homeownership.
It’s All About Balance
Julie sets high expectations for herself and uses goal setting and vision boards to plan her path to success in all aspects of her life. In October 2020, she was able to fulfill her long-time goal of purchasing a waterfront property.
For Julie, it’s all about balance. She is a major advocate of blocking time for herself and for her family. Her mental and physical health are very important, and she knows that she’s no good to anyone if she’s not looking after herself.
When she’s not showing homes or helping a local organization, Julie enjoys spending time with her kids and 18 month-old grandson, golfing with friends, spending time on Lake Scugog, biking, and yoga.
#FunFact: During the early days of the pandemic Julie, along with a team of 5 local ladies did the grocery shopping and home delivery for many local seniors. The service is still offered to seniors on Tuesdays at Vos’ Independent.
